European Individual Chess Championship 2007 which was held in Dresden, Germany is over.
One of the stars of women chess IM Tatiana Kosintseva won the Eureopan Individual Chess Championship with a commanding 10/11 winning her last round game against IM Maia Lomineishvili despite she had already guaranteed her title. GM Vladislav Tkachiev won his first European Championship title after tie-break games. 2006 European Individual Champion for women IM Ekaterina Atalık finished the event with a shared fifth and lost the struggle for a possible consecutive gold medal after losing against IM Tatiana Kosintseva.

President's Cup in Turkey, one of the strongest national tournaments in Turkey was held in Ankara Atatürk Chess Centre between 27-30 April 2007.
After the thriller in the final rounds, IM Umut Atakişi won the tournament with 9.5 points sharing the first place with IM Kıvanç Haznedaroğlu but having the better tie break.

After the finalization of the licence agreement with FIDE, Global Chess is will begin working on World Class Chess tournaments (including the next world championship cycle). The investments are going to be evaluated in order to promote the game of chess.

CHAMPION OF TURKEY: GM SUAT ATALIK
Turkish Chess Championship was held in Atatürk Chess Centre between 1-15 March 2007. Grandmaster Suat Atalık who won the Mediterranean Championship recently also won the national title for the third time (1987 and 1988) with 11/13 without losses. In the final round, Atalık defeated IM Erdoğdu who shared the second place with IM Esen both in 9 points and they are going to play tie-break matches on March 14,2007. The matches are starting at 15:00 in local time. You can watch the last two round games from Atatürk Stadium. In the last round GM Atalık is going to face IM Erdoğdu.
Indian grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand won 24th Super Grandmaster Chess Tournament, Morelia/Linares with 8.5/14. There was a two way tie for the second place by Norwegian youngster Magnus Carlsen and Alexander Morozevich, both of them playing in Morelia/Linares for the first time.

Beşiktaş claimed its second consecutive Turkish Chess Leauge title with only one grandmaster in their playing squad (GM Vugar Gashimov) with 29 points.
Tarsus Zeka finished the league in the second place with 26 points with a mixture of strong Georgian players led by GM Levan Pantsualia and strong Turkish players.
The third place was occupied by THY (Turkish Airlines) with 25 points having despite having strong foreign players like GM Merab Gagunashvili, IM Anna Muzychuk and Turkish IMs Haznedaroğlu, Erdoğdu and Can.
The fourth spot which might become the final ticket for European Club Cup participation was taken by Denizli Erbakır the sensation of 2006-2007 season after defeating their rivals for the fourth place Manisa Doruk Koleji 8.5-1.5.
1st Quarter 2007 Presidential Board Meeting was held between 26-28 January 2007 in Limra Hotel in Kemer Antalya. All of the highest officials of FIDE are attending the meeting including FIDE President Kirsan Nikolayevich Ilyumzhinov. There are also various international chess journalists here to follow the Board Meeting. 2007 First Quarter FIDE Presidential Board Meeting is being held in Kemer Limra Hotel in Antalya between 26-28 January. All of the highest officals of FIDE including President Kirsan Nikolayevich Ilyumzhinov are attending the meeting and determining the future of chess. At the beginning of the first session, President of TCF Ali Nihat Yazıcı stated that in the name of TCF he is proud to be hosting this important meeting and expressed the Board his gratitude for assigning TCF such an organization. First Round of Corus 2007 Started Today
Turkish Grandmaster Suat Atalık who won Corus C group with 10.5/13 quite comfortably last year is now playing Corus B which is going to be quite challenging for the Grandmaster from İstanbul. Corus Wijk aan Zee is one of the oldest traditional tournaments which is the first "Grand Slam" event of the year. The event is between 12-28 January 2007. The sponsor of the event, which game its name, Corus is one of the largest steel companies in Europe since 2000. If GM Atalik wins this difficult group, he will be the first grandmaster to win C and B groups consecutively and qualifying for Group A, where world's strongest grandmasters are invited.
The first round of Corus Wijk aan Zee started today. GM Suat Atalık had a draw with white pieces against local youngster GM Daniel Stellwagen (2587).

Gens Una Sumus reemphasized by Kok and Ilyumzhinov
On December 22,2006, an important memorandum was announced in Prag signed between two former opponents for FIDE Presidency Elections in May 2006, Turin; FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and businessman Bessel Kok. According to this memorandum, a company named Global Chess was inaugurated for the sake of promoting, developing and marketing chess. The activities of the company are going to include promotion of World Championship matches and tournaments, Youth and Junior World Championships. There is business plan for 5 years with an initial investment of EUR 4.5 million with further injection of EUR 5.5 million in the future. Apart from world championship cycles and events, investments on training academies, software and other future projects related to promoting the game of chess. The company is going to work with the authorization given by FIDE. The Board of Directors are going to be the chairman of the company Bessel Kok, FIDE Presidents Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and Alexey Barsov.

Adrian Michalcishin: "Nobody expected that it was possible to make such big progress in such short time"
Some time ago, TCF Press Officer Özgur Akman had an interview with GM Adrian Bogdanovich Michalhchishin who was in Turker for trainer seminars and playing for TED Kolejliler in İş Bankası Chess League. The Turkish version of the interview had already been published in Turkish version of TCF web site and it is now available in English. Contest of the year: Neslihan Demir voted as Sportsperson of the Year Kübra at the second place
According to the report of Milliyet, Neslihan Demir was voted as the Sportsperson of the year while Kübra Öztürk was just few votes short of Neslihan Demir and became second in the voting. It is the first time that a chess player was nominated in such a large-scale voting in Turkey. However, it was such a thrilling race between Under 16 European Champion and the star of the national volleyball team.

Mevlana Chess Festival which is going to be held in Konya between November 30-December 7 2006 is starting today at 4 p.m. Konya, Mevlana Chess Festival is the most recent international chess festival organized in Turkey.
The prizes of the event are sponsored by the Governorship of Konya. Konya Youth and Sports District Directorate, Konya Culture and Tourism Directorate and Turkish Chess Federation are the sponsors of the event.
The open category of the event was won by IM Farid Abbasov from Azerbaijan and also player of Konyaspor in Is Bankasi Chess League with 7/8. The second place was occupied by another Azerbaijani International Master and also player of Konyaspor, Rashad Babaev with 6.5/8. 3-5.places are shared by GM Handszar Odeev, IM Umut Atakişi and Armen Grigoriev.
In the under 16 category Turkish hopeful Atilla Yüksel and Arslan Othiyev shared the first place with 5/6 while Halil İbrahim Özen and Nazlı Kovan shared the third place with 4.5/6.
In the blitz category, the winner was the same as the open, Farid Abbasov while the 2-5. places were shared by IM Hasan Kılıçaslan, Armen Grigoriev, IM Rashad Babaev and FM Ahmed Hamad.

The World Juniors Chess Championships are going to be organised in Istanbul, from November 8th to 23rd. 15 GMs, 23 IMs, 13 FMs, 10 WGMs, 16 WIMs and 9 WFMs total 160 players from 56 countries have registered for the events. The championships will be one of most crowded in the last decade. The opening ceremony, hosted by the Turkish Chess Federation, will take place on November 9th at 15:30h.
Returning to Turkey after five years: GM Suat Atalik, 41
The same day, just after opening ceremony, there will be a very unusual wedding ceremony, also hosted by the TCF. GM Suat Atalik, the strongest Turkish GM, has returned to the country of his birth after five years in Bosnia. Suat, a Super-GM with a 2620 rating, will marry with WGM Ekaterina Polovnikova of Russia, who is 22 and ranked 43 in the women world ranking list (her rating is 2412). The ceremony will take part in Okan University in the Anatolian part of Istanbul. All principles and guests will join to ceremony at 17:00h.

Just after wedding ceremony the two grandmasters (bride and groom) will play a deciding blitz math for the leadership position at home.
