Leko, Gelfand ,Aronian and Grischuk: Candidates for Mexico

    

  

The Candidates Matches for the 2007 World Chess Championship Tournament was held in Elista between May 26 - June 14 2007. 16 candidates faced each other in two rounds a six-game match format in order to get the four visas for the 2007 World Championship in Mexico City. Grischuk won the playoff games against Rublevsky and earned a place in 2007 World Championship.

Participants of Mexico are Anand, Svidler, Morozevich, Kramnik, Aronian, Leko, Grischuk and Gelfand.

Second Round

After the fourth games of the second round former Russian Champion GM Rublevsky stroke back to equalize against GM Grischuk. Hungarian super-GM Peter Léko who eliminated GM Gurevich from Turkey in the first round is close to the victory against GM Evgeny Bareev. He needs a draw in the remaining two games in order to qualify for Mexico.

Turkish Chess Federation is the Internet sponsor of the event. The second round pairings and the results are as follows:

First Round

In the first round, GM Mikhail Gurevich, the first ever chess player for playing under Turkish flag qualifying into the Candidates Matches face GM Peter Leko, world number 8 and eliminated with a 0.5-3.5.
