Turkish Championship Qualification tournament is being held between 18-24 December 2006 in Antalya. The first 13 players are going to take part in the Turkish Championship 2007 which is going to be held in Atatürk Chess Centre, Ankara. The event started with the first move made by Honorary President of TCF Kahraman Olgaç on the board of WIM Betül Cemre Yıldız, the only woman player in the event, 5 times Turkish Champion in Women.
Top seed of the event is IM Barış Esen(2464), while FM Emre Can(2392) who completed his IM norms but waiting for confirmation from FIDE to acclaim IM title, three-time-winner of the Turkish Championship IM Umut Atakişi (2394),winners of Hevez open IM Mert Erdoğdu (2383) and FM Yakup Erturan (2365), FM Y.Emrah Yağız (2319) and FM Selim Çıtak(2312) are also participating to qualify for the Turkish Championship.
In the second round IM Esen faced Tanrıkulu, an IM-norm holder and the winner of the Preliminary event which concluded on Sunday and in the Moldavian Slav IM Esen gained a pawn around move 20 and went on to win the game. FM Emre Can also easily won the game after Büker who was the bronze medalist of Federation Cup 2005 blundered a mate in one away but in the final position Emre Can was already about to gain a pawn and the initiative. On the third board ,IM Atakişi won in fashion against Ercan, in Sicilian Najdorf with a typical sacrifice on e6 where black king had to remain in the centre while black's counter was not enough to avoid the disaster. IM Erdoğdu won an interesting endgame against Erşahin in a King's Indian Bayonet Attack exploiting the bishop pair in a drawish position and grabbed the full point in the end.
The first and third boards ended with a short draw on round 8. At the fourth board, IM Esen played his beloved Kings' Indian Fianchetto Variation and Erdoğdu chose Panno Variation with a6. Black played a relatively rare plan after Qc8 and it seemed white had a slightly better position but according our post game analysis with IM Erdoğdu he stated that it was necessary to play Qe8-Nd7 in order to hold the position and on 18th move Esen curiously offered draw. On the second board, FM Bayram defeated WIM Yıldız after WIM from İzmir had to sacrifice her piece for two pawns to gain some compensation and not lose e4 pawn in Ruy Lopez with early Bc5. It was not enough and the material advantage of black told itself in the end. FM Bayram is now the sole leader of the event with 6.5 points while FM Can is at the second place with 6 points. 6 players share the third place with 5.5 points.
